The Forest of Dean lies between the rivers Severn and Wye. The area comprises of a mixture of different species of fir tree, beech and oak to name but a few, providing valuable timber. Vegetation is varied with many types of fern, numerous areas where foxgloves thrive and in the Spring a blue carpet is formed when the bluebells appear. Wildlife is extremely interesting, weasels, stoats, rabbits, foxes can be seen and occasionally you are rewarded with the fantastic sighting of a deer either drinking in the natural ponds to be found in the forest,or feeding in the under growth. Squirrels scutter about frequently and there is an occasional sighting of a badger. Several species of bat make their home too. Bird life is extremely varied and includes woodpecker, tree pipit, linnet, goldcrest, hawfinch, robin, starling, magpie, the list is numerous.
There are some interesting places to visit. Speech House is at the centre of the Forest and there are many nice walks and sculpture trails have been created within the woods to walk through. Old iron ore mines have been transformed into interesting areas to visit, one to visit is the Puzzle Wood. Clearwell Caves is another interesting place to visit and during Christmas time there is an underground grotto where children can go along and see Father Christmas. There are picnic and barbeque areas to enjoy and streams and ponds to wander around at Cannop. There is a good steam railway which also has a dining carriage where you can enjoy Sunday lunch and an evening meal at various times in the year.
